Worlds destroyed by the atrocities of the ignorant

O host of fools soulless and happy!

You cannot bear the bloody splendor of the crown.

Which on the forehead of the singer

Puts a hand of stones, so late fair!

So rejoice, despicable crowd,

Read the past and our days hid:

Prophets are driven by black fate;

Ferocious sorrows guard them;

They drag their days in agony

And serpents dig into their hearts.

Ah, how much I see unfinished creatures,

Beckoning the soul with the beauty of hope

Pledge of woeful for the flame of talent

Worlds destroyed by the atrocities of the ignorant!

Certa vez Pushkin ficou doente e permaneceu internado na enfermaria.

Wilhelm, read your poems,

So I can fall asleep sooner.

Noutra ocasião, Pushkin escreveu outro epigrama dedicado a Küchelbecker:

I ate too much at supper
And Jacob locked the door wrong -
So it was to me, my friends,
And kychelbekerno and sickeningly.

The fate of Russian poets

The bitter fate of the poets of all tribes;

The hardest fate for all is Russia;

For glory and Ryleyev was born;

But the young man was in love with freedom ...

The loop was pulled by an impudent howl.

He is not alone; others follow him

Beautiful seduced by a dream

Replied a fatal year ...

God gave fire to their heart, light to the mind,

Yes! feelings in them are enthusiastic and ardent, -

Well? they are thrown into a black prison

Frozen hopeless links ...

Or the disease brings night and darkness

Into the eyes of visionary visionaries;

Or the hand of lovers of despicable

Sends a bullet to their holy brow;

Or a revolt will raise the black deaf,

And the mob will tear to pieces

Whose sparkling feathers fly

With a radiance, he would drench his native country.

Kyuhlu, o patinho feio do Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum

kuchelbecker.png

He is alone - and the rain is whipping towards him

Brief, but peaceful and quiet infant, sweet age!

But - ah, he does not know the price of a serene child's days.

A young man in a storm of passions, and a husband, fighting a riot,

On irrevocable sad in heavy and vain longing.

So a wanderer breaks out of the embrace of friends; but soon

Startled, overtaken by a thunderstorm, looked into a dull distance:

Looking - poor! - love, in vain seeks huts;

He is alone - and the rain is whipping towards him,

The wind whistles, thunders and roar of angry thunders,

And, illuminating the darkness, the lightning of a cloud cuts!

And if my life has seemed among the hardest

and though my storeroom's stock of grain is small,

what sense is there in hoping still for harvest

when snow from winter clouds begins to fall?

To you my book of verses I confide

To P. A. Pletnev and F. I. Tyutchev

To you, twin peers out of that pleiad blest,

Where I played once my party among the rest,

Preservers of the taste, the views, the ties

In which our circle started and grew wise,

Un blushing, yet not boldly satisfied,

To you my book of verses I confide.

Whatever pressures moved my mind or heart,

The fleeting gleams which in bright colors start

When Inspiration's hour in dreams appears,

What moved my mind to laughter, what to tears,

The genial fits, delusions and mistakes,

The unmeant faults that human frailty makes,

Things somewhat prized, yet as no partisan,

All that my mind or feelings chanced upon,

The good thing loved, the loathed escapade,

My whole confession, all of me betrayed,

You are to read in me perfidious book.

Rough numbers rise where you, my judges, look,

The wilful word, the sense ofr stress to gloze,

Harsh turns, and in the stanzas tags of prose.

Spare no regret nor blame, but still be hard;

From little sound the much corrupt discard.

But seek the man behind the bard to ken,

Redeem the pang from the defaulting pen.
