Em plena Nova Iorque de 1910, a leitura de His Family de Ernest Poole revela muitos detalhes da cidade nessa época, principalmente os detalhes da vida dos imigrantes pobres, cujos filhos frequentam a escola de uma das filhas da personagem principal, Roger Gale.

A Nova Iorque de 1910 era uma cidade intensa, movimentada, sem qualquer intenção de abrandar. Nesse mesmo ano a Penn Station original foi lançada, tornando-se na principal estação ferroviária da cidade de Nova Iorque e a mais movimentada. Três anos depois, a Grand Central Station foi inaugurada.

O ano de 1910 também marcou o início do novo nickname de Nova Iorque: “Big Apple”. Surgiu das áreas mais rurais que chamavam à cidade "maçã". O jornalista de corridas de cavalos John J. Fitz Gerald começou a popularizar o termo nos seus artigos.
